Outerwear is the clothes you put on over everything else when you go out: coats, jackets, , a heavy winter coat. It is not your shirt, and it is not your underwear. Shops love this word — “outerwear department” — because they need one label for all the top-layer clothes. At home, people more often just say coat or jacket. Though actually, a scarf or a hat is usually not called outerwear; the word stays with the main pieces you wear on your body over other clothes. You see it more on labels and websites than in everyday chat.
