    "Oughtn't" is the short form of "ought not." You use it when you mean someone should not do something, or that something is not the right thing: "You oughtn't to lie." In careful English, people often keep "to" after it: "oughtn't to." To many American ears it sounds a little old-fashioned or British; a lot of people would just say "shouldn't" instead. It is still understood. In writing, the stands for the missing "o" in "not."
