Ornithology is the scientific study of birds — how they live, how they are built, how they sing, nest, and travel. It sits inside the wider study of animals, but it has its own name because birds are a huge, special group. People use the word in universities, museums, and wildlife work. Everyday talk more often just says “the study of birds”; ornithology is the tidy, scientific name. Though actually, a lot of good bird knowledge also comes from careful who are not in a lab — the word still points to the science, not to casual watching.
