An ornithologist is a person whose science is birds. They do not only like birds, or watch them in the park for fun — though they often love them too. Their work is to look closely: what kind of bird it is, where it lives, what it eats, how it nests, when it flies away for the winter. They count, measure, take notes, and write so other scientists can check the work. You meet the word in nature films, universities, and bird books. It sounds a little formal, which fits, because it names a real job in science, not a hobby. A birdwatcher may know a lot; an ornithologist is the one trained to study birds as a field.
