An orbiter is a spacecraft sent to travel around the moon or a planet without ever landing on it. It carries equipment, not people, and its job is to look, measure, and send information home. Orbit means “to go round and round”; an orbiter is the machine that keeps doing that. You will hear it in news about Mars, the Moon, or other worlds — the lander goes down; the orbiter stays up. Though actually, the American space shuttle’s main vehicle was also called the Orbiter, and that one did carry people, so the word can stretch. In science news, though, it almost always means the unmanned kind.
