In old stories, especially ancient Greek ones, an oracle was a person, often a , believed to speak messages from the gods — people traveled to ask the oracle questions about the future. Today people still use 'oracle' for someone whose advice or predictions seem wise and often turn out to be right, sometimes said half-jokingly, like calling a smart friend 'my personal oracle'. Oracle is also the name of a big technology company.
