    An optometrist is a person whose job is to test your eyes and then order glasses that help you see more clearly. You sit in a chair, read letters on a chart, and they change lenses until the letters look sharp. Today they may also order contact lenses. In many countries this is not the same job as a hospital eye doctor, who treats disease and can do operations. Though actually, the line between the jobs is not the same everywhere, so the tidy dictionary picture is tidier than real life. In a town you often meet the optometrist in a glasses shop.
