To optimize something is to change the way you do it or use it, so that it works as well as it can for that job. People say it a lot at work and with computers: you optimize a plan, a machine, a website, a . The hope inside the word is not “a little better”, but “as good as this situation allows”. Though actually, in offices and in tech talk, people often use it more loosely, just to mean “improve” or “tweak”, even when nobody has found the very best way. It sounds a bit formal and clever. In British spelling you will also see optimise.

組成Latin optimus (“best”) + the verb ending -ize (“to make”). So the picture is “make it as good as it can be”. The same Latin piece sits behind French optimisme / optimiste.
