Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that studies the eyes and the diseases that affect them. It is the name of the field, not the name of the doctor — that doctor is an . You will see it on hospital department signs and in academic writing. In daily Taiwan Chinese, people often just say 眼科, which can mean the department, the specialty, and the clinic in one short word. English splits those more ; though actually, even English speakers may say they are “going to eye” in casual talk and save ophthalmology for the formal name of the subject.
