The onus is the duty or the heavy job of dealing with something — the responsibility that sits on you. English almost always uses it in a small set of shapes: the onus is on you to… and the onus of proof (in law, the job of proving the claim). It is a formal, slightly lawyerly word. Friends would just say it’s on you or that’s your job. You cannot really pile up onuses in casual talk; people rarely make a plural of it. Though actually, it sounds like on us, and that is a useful accident for memory — the burden is on us — but it is not two English words stuck together. It came in as a learned borrowing from Latin onus, literally “burden,” the kind you carry.
