A one-star hotel or restaurant has been judged to sit at the bottom of a star scale. Travel books and tourist boards give stars: five stars means grand and expensive; one star means simple, and not of a very high standard. You can still stay or eat there. It is a real rank, not an insult by itself. Though actually, the same words feel harsher on a phone. When a customer taps one star on a review app, they usually mean this was bad. That is a personal score, not an official hotel class. So a one-star hotel (the official kind) and a one-star review (the angry kind) share a name but not a mood. People also hang the label on films, books, and anything else that gets stars. The word is everyday and a little blunt.
