Oncoming describes something — most often a car, a bus, or traffic — that is coming towards you, along the same road from the other way. Drivers talk about oncoming headlights at night; a child might be told not to step out in front of oncoming traffic. It usually sits before a noun: oncoming car, oncoming vehicle. You would not normally say “the car is oncoming.” Though actually, English also has a quieter, more story-like use: the oncoming of winter, meaning something is on its way. That use feels a little old, like a book. For , the road meaning is the one that matters, and it always means towards you, not just “coming soon.”
