Oman is a country on the south-east corner of the Arabian Peninsula, with Saudi Arabia to the north-west and Yemen to the south-west. Its capital is . It is a sultanate: a sultan rules it, not a president. Most people there are Muslim, and oil is the product the rest of the world has long noticed first, though the country also has a long coast and a history of sea trade. Older books give a population of a little over three million (2014); it has grown since. In English we stress the second part: oh-MAHN.
