Olympic means “to do with the Olympic Games”: the Olympic torch, Olympic athletes, an Olympic record. People stretch it a little — an “Olympic effort” means you tried as if a gold medal were waiting, even when no games are on. The everyday name for the event is “the Olympics”; Olympic is the describing word that sits in front of other nouns. It feels proud and official, and it almost always takes a capital O when it points at those Games.
