1. 1

Oilcloth is cloth that has been treated with oil so the surface goes smooth and water cannot soak through. People used it for , bags, and covers: wipe it, and the spill stays on top. The old kind was real cloth with boiled oil on it — a bit stiff, sometimes with a faint oil smell. Though actually, a lot of what shops now call oilcloth is cotton coated with plastic, not oil at all. It looks and behaves the same way — wipe-clean, a little shiny — so the name stuck. It is not cloth made of oil, and it is not the same as a nylon , even if both keep water out.
