    Oi is a sharp little shout, mainly in British English, to make someone look at you — like hey, but often ruder and louder. A person in the street might shout “Oi!” if they want you to stop or to listen. Friends may use it ; a stranger using it can sound cross. It is working-class and Cockney in feel, not careful or polite. It comes from an older shout, hoy, with the h dropped; first written down in the 1930s. It is not the same as Portuguese oi, which is a friendly hello, or Japanese おい, even though they look alike. Though actually, Oi (often Oi!) is also a loud, simple kind of British punk music from around 1980, tied to working-class youth — same shout, turned into a music name.
