    A group of hormones. The body makes them mainly in the ovaries, and they help a girl's body change in puberty, they help steer the monthly cycle, and they help prepare the body for pregnancy. People often call oestrogen “the female hormone,” but that is too tidy: men's bodies make a little too, and some also comes from fat tissue. Doctors use oestrogen in birth-control pills and in some hormone treatments. It is not the same substance as progesterone, another hormone in the cycle. British spelling is oestrogen; American spelling is estrogen — same hormones, different letters.
