Odoriferous is a long, rather grand adjective meaning “giving off a smell” — the same idea as odorous, only dressed in heavier clothes. It does not tell you whether the smell is nice or nasty; the rest of the sentence does that. An odoriferous garden after rain can be lovely; an odoriferous cheese can make people step back. You will almost never hear this word in the street. Writers reach for it when they want a fancy, old, or slightly funny tone. Though actually, because it sounds so heavy, people sometimes use it on purpose for strong or unpleasant smells, as if the long word itself were holding its nose. Daily English says smelly (usually bad), fragrant (nice), or simply “it smells of…”. Keep odoriferous for books and for a raised eyebrow.
