An oculist is a doctor who examines and treats people’s eyes. The word is old-fashioned now. Today people usually say for the medical eye doctor (disease, surgery) and optometrist for the person who tests your sight and fits glasses. Oculist used to cover that ground, and you still find it in older books, period films, and some old signs. In a modern clinic in Taiwan, nobody looks for the “oculist”; they look for 眼科. It is not a wrong word — it has mostly aside. An optician, by the way, is often the person who makes or sells the glasses, not the same job.
