An octogenarian is a person who is in their eighties — from 80 to 89. It can also sit in front of a noun: an octogenarian writer. Newspapers and polite writing like this word; in speech, most people just say “he’s in his eighties” or “eighty-something”. It is not an insult and not a medical label — it only names that ten-year band. Though actually, students sometimes hear it as a fancy way to say “very old”, but 81 and 99 are not the same age, and this word only covers the eighties. The Latin-style neighbours are (70–79) and (90–99). Those are even rarer in speech.
