    Obscurantism is the practice of keeping people in the dark on purpose. A government, a church, a company, or even a school hides facts, uses language, or fights against new knowledge so that others cannot see clearly. It is a heavy, formal word. You meet it in essays about , science, and history, not at the dinner table. It is always a criticism. It sits near “anti-intellectual,” though actually it is a bit more specific: it is not only disliking clever talk, it is actively covering things up or making them harder to know.
