An oboe is a long, thin wooden pipe that you play by blowing. At the top there is a double reed: two small pieces of cane that shake against each other when the air goes through. That is why the sound is thin, a little like speaking through the nose, and quite high — not round and soft like a flute. You mostly meet it in an orchestra or a wind band; it often plays the note that everyone else tunes to at the start of a concert. English used to call it a hautboy. Around 1770 people began writing the Italian spelling oboe instead. The older French name hautbois just means “high wood”: a high-pitched woodwind. It is not a clarinet. A clarinet has one reed; an oboe has two, and the sound is sharper.
組成Adopted into English around 1770 from Italian oboè, which was how Italian wrote the French word hautbois: haut (“high, loud, high-pitched”) + bois (“wood”). English had already been using the older form hautboy.
