Obese means very fat in a way that is bad for health — not just “a bit overweight.” Doctors use it with a number in mind (body mass index over a set line), so in clinics and news it is a medical label, not a casual joke. In everyday talk it can sound harsh or , so careful speakers often say overweight, plus-size, or talk about health without the word. You can say an obese person or obese patients; of a thing (an obese cat) it is possible but less common. It is an adjective. The matching noun is obesity.
