If something is edible, you can eat it and it should not harm you — it is food, or it can be used as food. We reach for the word when there is a real chance the thing might not be safe: a mushroom, a wild plant, a flower on a cake, even an insect. It does not mean 'tasty'. A dry is edible; a pretty poisonous berry is not. You will also meet it as a noun, usually in the plural: edibles, meaning foods, often the simple kind you pack or pick. It is a calm, slightly careful word — more at home on a label or in a nature book than in 'I'm hungry, what's in the fridge?', where people just say what can we eat. Though actually, cooks do use it with a smile: 'Are these flowers edible?'

組成From Late Latin edibilis, 'able to be eaten', from Latin edō, 'I eat', plus a suffix that means 'able to be'. English also made eatable from eat; the two words are twins (doublets).
