An OBE is a British honour: a public thank-you the King or Queen gives for work a person has done for the country. The letters stand for Officer of the Order of the British Empire. You write them after a name — Jane Smith OBE — not before it, and not like a job title on a card. It is not a university degree and not a job; it is a mark of service, often after years of work in nursing, teaching, art, science, sport, or public life. Though actually, “British Empire” in the name is a leftover from an older time. Britain does not have an empire now, but the honour kept the old name. There are neighbouring ranks in the same order (an sits a step below, a a step above), and news stories often say someone “has been made an OBE.” In Taiwan this is not a local title. You mainly meet it on British names and in British headlines.
