Nut-brown means a dark, warm brown, like the shell or the inside of a nut. Writers use it for hair, skin after sun, autumn leaves, ale, or cloth. It is a little old-fashioned and literary; in shops today you more often see dark brown. It does not mean the colour of every nut — cashews are pale — but that rich brown people have long pictured when they say “nut.”
