A numismatist is someone who collects coins, and often medals too, and studies them. It is not only “a person with a jar of old coins.” A serious numismatist looks at dates, the picture on each side, the metal, tiny marks, and where the coin was made, and may also read about the kings, wars, or trade behind it. People use the word in museums, clubs, and auction rooms; it sounds learned, not everyday. You can be a numismatist as a hobby or as work. Though actually, many collectors never call themselves that — they just say they collect coins — while “numismatist” is the name you meet in books and on expert badges.
