Numismatics is the study and collecting of coins, medals, and often old . A person who does this is a . Museums, auction houses, and serious collectors use the formal word. Most people just say they collect coins. The subject is history you can hold: whose face is on the metal, where it was struck, what it could buy, why a medal was given. It is not a word for counting money or for economics. The -ics ending makes it look like mathematics or physics — a field of study — and that part of the look is fair. The root, though, is not number. It came into English from French numismatique, from a Latin word for a coin, itself from Greek nómisma, “a coin in use,” from the word for custom. A coin was, in that old sense, the piece custom said you could spend.
