A nuclear-free place has a rule: no nuclear materials here. You may not carry them, keep them, or use them in that area. Towns, islands, and even whole countries have called themselves nuclear-free, often after people stood against nuclear weapons or nuclear power plants. In news and the word is serious and public; it is not slang. Though actually, a “nuclear-free city” on a sign may mean “we do not want weapons here,” while a plant or a ship might still sit just outside the line — the tidy phrase can be tidier than the facts on the ground. The second half is the same -free as in smoke-free: without this thing.
nuclear-free 的意思是沒有核子物質。在這樣的地方，你不能帶、不能存放，也不能在該區域使用核子材料。很多城鎮、島嶼，甚至整個國家都會自稱 nuclear-free，常常是因為當地人反對核武或核電廠而站出來。這個詞在新聞和政治報導裡用得很正式、很公開，不是俚語。
要注意的是，一塊寫著「nuclear-free city」的牌子，可能只表示我們不想要武器，而電廠或船隻也許仍停在界線外。這個說法比實際情況來得整齊。後半的 -free 和「smoke-free」一樣，意思是沒有這個東西，固定寫法是「＿＿-free」。台灣常說「非核家園」，就是同樣的概念。
