A written short form of near, used in addresses and on maps, especially in British English. A village written 'Little Compton nr Oxford' sits close to Oxford, not inside it. You do not say 'nr' out loud — you say 'near.' You would not put it in a school essay or a text to a friend; it lives on , forms, and place lists. Small letters are the usual look. It is not a spoken word and not a general for 'close.'
