A novelization is a book that tells, in story form, what already happened in a film or a television series. The film or series comes first; writers then turn that story into a novel, often so fans can read it on the train. The British spelling is often novelisation, with an s. These books are usually sold as entertainment, not as “serious” literature, and they follow the film quite closely — though actually some add extra scenes the camera never showed. The other direction has a different name: when a book is made into a film, that is an adaptation of a novel, not a novelization.
