A notifiable disease or a notifiable crime is one that the law says you must report to the government or the police. The word does not mean “you may tell people if you like”. It means you have to. Doctors, hospitals, and labs use it for illnesses that the health office needs to know about so they can stop a spread. Law people use it for offences that must be reported. You will not hear it in everyday chat about a cold; it belongs to official forms, news, and public-health talk, and it feels formal. Though actually, what counts as notifiable changes with each country’s rules and with the year, so the adjective is about the legal duty, not about how serious the illness feels to you personally. A mild case can still be notifiable if it is on the list.
