Not-for-profit describes a group that is not set up so owners can take home the extra money. A not-for-profit school, hospital, or charity can still charge fees and can still have money left at the end of the year; that leftover is meant to go back into the work, not into someone's pocket as profit.
Not-for-profit describes說的是 a group一種團體: that is not set up so它成立的目的並不是要 owners讓老闆 the extra money把多出來的錢 can take home帶回家。 A not-for-profit school, hospital, or charity非營利的學校、醫院或慈善機構 can still charge fees仍然可以收費, and can still have money left也仍然可以有錢剩下 at the end of the year在年底; that leftover那筆結餘 is meant to go back into the work應該回到工作本身, not into someone's pocket而不是進到誰的口袋 as profit變成利潤。
People use it as an adjective (a not-for-profit hospital) and as a noun (she works for a not-for-profit).
People use it人們把它 as an adjective當形容詞用 (a not-for-profit hospital一間非營利醫院), and as a noun也當名詞用 (she works for a not-for-profit她在一個非營利組織工作)。
In American English, nonprofit — often written as one word — is the more common twin, and most speakers treat them as the same. Though actually lawyers sometimes try to split them, one for the group and one for the activity, but in ordinary talk they blur.
In American English在美式英文裡, nonprofit—— often written as one word常常寫成一個字—— is the more common twin是比較常見的那個雙胞胎, and most speakers多數人 treat them as the same把兩個當成一樣。 Though actually不過其實, lawyers律師 sometimes try to split them有時會想把它們分開, one for the group一個給團體、 and one for the activity一個給活動, but in ordinary talk但在日常談話裡 they blur兩者是糊在一起的。
British English often says charity or non-profit-making instead. The are usual in not-for-profit because the three pieces work as one idea.
British English英式英文 often常常 instead says改說 charity or charity 或 non-profit-making。 in not-for-profit在 not-for-profit 裡, The hyphens are usual連字號是常態, because因為 the three pieces這三塊 work as one idea是當一個概念在用。
