Norwich is a city in Norfolk, in the east of England. It is the city where the local government for that county sits. It has a cathedral, a long history as a market town, and a university, the University of East Anglia. It is not London, and it is not on the sea; it is an inland English city that grew rich on trade and cloth, and still feels like a county capital rather than a huge modern sprawl. In English place names, a quiet w in the middle is common: people say NOR-rij, not nor-witch. Though actually many English -wich towns were once trading settlements; the spelling kept an old piece meaning a hamlet or a trading place, even after the sound of the word moved on.
