Northwestern means in, or from, the northwest part of a country, a region, or some other area. A northwestern town sits in that corner of the map. Northwestern weather is the weather you get there. It is an adjective: it tells you where something belongs, not which way it is moving (that would be ). People also freeze it into names — Northwestern University in the United States is so well known that students just say Northwestern. Though actually, the northwest is not one kind of place: northwestern Spain and the northwestern United States are very different, and speakers inside a country may argue about where the northwest even starts. Compare northern (the whole north side) and western (the whole west side); northwestern is the corner where those two meet.
