The usual name for the old Anglo-Saxon kingdom in the north of England and the south of Scotland — important from the seventh to the ninth centuries — is Northumbria. Northumbrian is the word that belongs to that kingdom, and people also use it unofficially for Northumberland, the county just south of Scotland. So you will hear a Northumbrian king, Northumbrian art, the Northumbrian dialect, and a Northumbrian (a person from that land or that county). The ending -an is the same kind of ending as in American or Roman: “of that place.” Though actually, speakers often blur Northumbrian, Northumbria, and Northumberland, especially when they are not doing history. If you need the kingdom’s own name, use Northumbria; if you need the person or the describing word, Northumbrian is the one that fits.
