Northumberland is a county in northeast England. It sits just south of Scotland, with the North Sea on its east side. For England it is large and rather empty — hills, forests, and a long wild coast. The Roman wall called Hadrian’s Wall runs across it, and that is what many visitors come to see. The name is old. In Old English it was Norþhymbra land, “land of the ,” the people who lived north of the River Humber. Though actually, that old land was much bigger than the county on today’s map. People often mix Northumberland up with , the name of the old Anglo-Saxon kingdom; Northumberland is the county you can still point to now.
