Normandy is a part of northwest France, on the English Channel. The ports of and Le Havre are where many boats from England come in. British families have long gone there for holidays, camping or staying in a gîte (a rented country house). History students meet it for two big stories: the Normans who crossed from here to England in 1066, and the 1944 landings, when soldiers from Britain, America, and their friends came ashore on the Normandy beaches. The name means the land of the North-men: the first Normans were people from who settled there. Though actually, the tidy “holiday ferry” picture in older British books is only one face of it — the war beaches, the apple farms, and the cooking with cream are how many people know it now.
