A noob is someone who has just started, especially in a game or on the internet — and the speaker is not being kind. It is a teasing or word for a beginner who does not know the rules yet, or who keeps making the same mistakes. It comes from newbie, cut down to newb, then spelled noob to match the sound. Older internet writing sometimes used n00b with zeros; that is the same jab. Friends can say it with a laugh. Said at a stranger, it is an insult. Newbie is the softer word: still “new,” but it does not push the person down as hard. This is gaming and internet slang. Do not put it in a school essay unless you are talking about that slang.
