1. 1

A noncontributory pension or insurance plan is paid for by the employer only. You do not put your own money in. You may still receive the money later; the word is about who pays, not about who gets paid. The opposite kind is a contributory plan, where you and the employer both pay, or you pay and the employer adds a share. You meet this word in HR letters, pension booklets, and insurance small print — not in everyday chat. People sometimes stretch it to mean any scheme you do not fund yourself, even outside work. Though actually, a plan can look 'free' to you and still cost tax or a lower wage somewhere else; the label only tells you there is no staff contribution line.

noncontributoryadj

  • 1

Describing a pension plan in which the members do not provide their own direct contributions (that is, the employer makes all monetary contributions; the employees make no monetary contributions, whereas their service toward the company's ability to operate is their indirect contribution, for which the pension is remuneration).

  • 2

Not being a contributing factor (to a decision, analysis, or situation), such as not contributing to a medical diagnosis.

    • Although medical history is always relevant to diagnosis, it is sometimes noncontributory, shedding no light on possible causes of symptoms.
