    In British church history, Nonconformism is the name for the Protestant Christian groups that would not “conform” to the Church of England — the official state church. Baptists, Methodists, Congregationalists and others in that story belong to this family of churches. The word is often written with a capital N when it means this religious tradition, not just any kind of “not fitting in.” It is a history-and-religion word. A student in Taiwan will meet it in texts about Britain, not in daily chat. It does not mean “being a rebel in general”; that looser meaning belongs more to and nonconformity without the capital letter.
