When a writer or speaker makes up a word, or a phrase, just for this one moment — and does not expect anyone to keep using it — that word is a nonce word. Nonce here means “for this once, for this one occasion.” You will meet it most in books about language, and in the old phrase for the nonce, which means “for now; for this one time.” It is not an everyday word in conversation.
