  1. 1非會員、非成員；台灣健身房、俱樂部價目表上直接寫「非會員」，國際新聞講國家時則說「非成員國」。注意中文的「會員」偏商業，「成員」偏組織團體，英文一個 member 兩邊都包，翻的時候要看講的是誰。

    Someone who does not belong to a particular club, group, or organization. The word only makes sense against a named group: you are not a non-member in general, you are a non-member of the golf club, of the union, of the EU.

    It is a practical, administrative word. You meet it on signs and price lists, where the whole point is to divide people into two boxes and charge them differently: "Members £5, non-members £12". You meet it in rules — non-members may not use the pool, non-members must be signed in by a member. And you meet it in international news, where countries that have not joined a body are non-members: "non-member states of the UN".

    Because it is defined only by absence, it sounds neutral and slightly cold. Nobody describes themselves as a non-member; they say "I'm not a member". The noun form belongs mostly to whoever is writing the rules, not to the person being described.

    It also works as a before another noun: non-member countries, non-member guests, non-member rates. Written with or without the ; "nonmember" is common in American English.

組成non- (not) + member. Member came through French from Latin membrum, which meant a limb of the body — an arm, a leg. A group was pictured as a body, and each person in it was one limb of it. A non-member is a limb of some other body.
