Said of cloth, and almost always of shirts: made so that it comes out of the wash smooth and does not need . Hang a non-iron shirt up while it is still damp, let it dry, and it should be wearable without you touching it with an iron.
This is shop language — you meet it on labels, price tags, and clothing websites, mostly on men's business shirts. It is a selling word, and like most selling words it promises a little more than it delivers. In real life a non-iron shirt usually comes out mostly smooth, with a few soft creases; people who care about looking sharp still give the collar and cuffs a quick press. Manufacturers know this, which is why you also see the gentler words "easy-care", "easy-iron" and "wrinkle-free" doing the same job with different amounts of honesty.
One thing worth knowing: the smoothness is not magic, it is chemistry. The cotton is treated with a resin so the fibres hold their shape. That treatment makes the cloth slightly stiffer and less than plain cotton, and it wears off over many washes. So "non-iron" is a real property, but a one.
The word is an adjective and sits before the noun: a non-iron shirt, non-iron cotton. British; Americans more often say "wrinkle-free" or "no-iron".
