Non-fiction is writing about the real world: what happened, how something works, someone’s life, a place, a science idea. History books, true biographies, travel writing, , and news essays sit here. Fiction is the made-up story side — novels, most short stories. A novel can feel true and still be fiction; a memoir can use memory and still be sold as non-fiction, though actually people do argue when a “true” book stretches the facts. In the word is a shelf label more than a feeling. It is ordinary school and publishing English, not slang.
non-fiction 指寫真實世界的作品，例如發生過什麼事、事物怎麼運作、某人的一生、某個地方，或一個科學概念。歷史書、真實傳記、旅遊寫作、食譜和新聞評論都屬於這一類。
和它相對的是 fiction，也就是虛構的故事，例如小說。不過界線有時很模糊：小說讀起來可能很真實，但仍是虛構；回憶錄可以用記憶來寫，仍然算非虛構。如果一本「真實」的書誇大了事實，大家就會爭論。
在書店裡，non-fiction 更像書架上的分類標籤，而不是一種感覺。它是一般學校和出版界的用語，不是俚語。
