A fictional person, place, or event lives in a story — a book, a film, a play — not in the real world. Sherlock Holmes is fictional. So is a fictional town that a writer made up. It is a calm, neutral word; teachers and reviews use it all the time. Though actually, people stretch it a little: “a fictional account” of a real war means the telling is invented, even if some of the facts are not. That is close to the verb . Fictional does not usually mean “lying”. If someone invents a fake name to trick a bank, English more often says , which sounds colder, more “this is not true”. Fictional just says: this belongs to a story. For almost every school sentence, this is the word you want, not (rare, ) and not (often about false facts).
