Nominal has two common uses. First, it means 'in name only' — something is called that, but isn't really that in practice (a 'nominal leader' who has the title but no real power). Second, in money talk, it means a very small amount compared to the real value (a 'nominal fee' of one dollar). Both uses show up in business, news, and formal writing more than casual chat.
