- 1
Noiseless means without making any sound. It is a little more formal, a little more like a book, than quiet or silent. Writers like it when something moves or works without the sound you would expect: a noiseless fan, a noiseless typewriter in an old story, the noiseless flight of an owl. Quiet can still allow a little sound; noiseless claims there is none. You would not usually call a shy person noiseless — that would sound strange — you would call them quiet. Use noiseless for machines, rooms, and movements, when you want to stress that noise is missing.
