NM is the written short form of New Mexico, a state in the south-west of the United States, along the border with Mexico. You see it on letters, number plates, and weather maps. When you speak, you usually say New Mexico, not the two letters — though in a list of states people may rattle off “N-M” the same way they say “N-J”. It names a place. That is all this entry is for.
