1. 1

Nitroglycerine is a heavy, liquid with two very different lives. Miners and builders of the old days knew it as a powerful explosive — bump it, and it can go off. Alfred Nobel mixed it with a kind of earth so it would not explode just from being moved; that mix is dynamite. Doctors know a tiny bit of the same chemical as a heart medicine. It makes the small tubes that carry blood a little wider, so a tight pain in the chest can ease. You may see a tablet that goes under the tongue. Though actually it is the amount that changes everything: a drop that breaks rock, and a crumb that helps a heart. The British spelling keeps the e: nitroglycerine. American spelling often drops it: nitroglycerin. Same stuff. You will meet it in history, chemistry, and hospital talk, not in everyday chat.
